Intermediate Lessons

Intermediate lessons are ready for you after you learn basic skills at the piano during your beginning lessons. After a number of years of study you will be ready to progress to a more advanced stage in your piano education. All of these abilities continue throughout intermediate and advanced levels in more complex music repertoire. How exciting it will be for you to play music of master composers, such as Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, even Debussy and Rachmaninoff among many others.

“Music washes away from the soul, the dust of everyday life.”
Berthold Auerbach (1812–1882), German-Jewish poet and author

The skills you have learned will continue when you apply them to new literature in your lessons. They include more complex rhythms and meter, negotiating harmonic and melodic patterns, fingering to accommodate the more advanced music you are learning, choreography at the keyboard, pedaling, relating more difficult notation from music staff paper to the piano keys, using more dynamic nuances, key signatures, more complex pattern identification when learning scales, arpeggios and chord progressions.

Besides technique at the piano, you are learning to fine tune your music to your emotions and your emotions to the music that you play. You are now ready to read and play music at the next level of accomplishment. Information about the composers and eras in which they lived will help to better understand their music. Go to the Historical Perspective page to get an idea of who these composers were and what their music sounds like.

In addition to playing music by classical composers who lived many years ago you will be learning contemporary music, some of which was written and is being written in your lifetime. You will learn to compose your own music in your favorite styles.

You can continue on to learn more improvisation skills and playing by ear. It is so satisfying and so much fun to progress to the Intermediate Lessons level.
